It had been a critical and extraordinarily dangerous rescue mission. Kai, one of the most widely admired young women among the Oina, had run into the treacherous forest of Yoshpet, presumably to reach the hidden village at its center, and had failed to return. Oki chose to act before anyone else had recovered from their fright, racing in after her. Pursuing her trail, even through the confusing maze of trees and the debilitating miasma, he'd hoped to track her down and rescue the female from whatever demon or force had detained her. Unfortunately, no one could claim to be able to navigate the forest in complete safety. Even with his prodigious strength and force of will, the Oina warrior fell victim to the oldest of perils, simple bad luck. Now Kai being in trouble was a distant concern.
Life flourished within Yoshpet, but it was not of the more familiar kinds, and all of it was hostile. Oki struggled ineffectively against the cursed flora that had ensnared him, the vines that formed difficult barriers across already unsafe paths having enwrapped him thoroughly. Its thorns were unable to fully pierce his fur, but their jabs as he fought his bonds were uncomfortable to say the least. He'd been forced to halt under a demonic tree, one of its smaller fruits filling his mouth, resisting any effort to destroy it as the dark flames burned his tongue. This was incredibly unpleasant, and Oki knew reprieve was unlikely at most. The freezing temperatures might eventually encase him in ice, trapping him in perhaps the same way Kai was held. If only he’d been able to reach her!
